4OPT. 1

WHAT WE'VE DONE SO FAR:

Muireann O'Donoghue:
This year our school is taking part in an all-Ireland competition called Junk Kouture. This is where we are put into groups of no more than three and have to make an outfit out of recyclable material, such as old newspapers, clothes, magazine, fruit and vegetable peeling, tea bags etc. My group have two other girls in it, Sarah and Abbie. When we were first told about this we had to decide on a theme, e.g. shoes. We first designed an outfit out of shoes and laces but it just wasn’t practical and we didn’t think we could get all the recourses in time. We then decided on the idea corset tapes and designed a new outfit.

Ciara O'Connell:
Since the start of out project,Me and Alannah have completed the top pat of our outfit. Which is a glittery purple with leaves going diagonally from the left shoulder to the right just above the hip. For the bottom we are hoping to do a shredded news paper skirt, which will be long at the back and knee length at the front. We are hoping to be finished our skirt the week we come  back from midterm and then we'll work on attatching the top part of our outfit. Alannah has also been out for a good few days so i have been working by myself so it might take a little bit longer to finish

Lisa O'Connor:
In the past seven weeks I have been making our Junk Koture dress out of bottle caps and straws. I collected the materials around the estates, from pubs, friends and neighbours.
I made the bottom half of our dress out of chicken wire and I covered it in paper maché until I got a shape into it. At the moment I have been sewing straws together using fishing wire. It’s very time consuming but it’s getting there. I also made jewellery using wires and the tops off cans. My group and I still have to sew the straws onto the bottom half of the dress and get a start on the shoes!

Abbie Keegan:
For junk couture I am working in a group with Muireann and Sarah, so far it has all been going really well and our outfit is coming together well!I’m the project ‘leader’, but that just means I decide on what jobs we need to do, we all do the same amount of work and have an equal amount of say on our design! Tasks I have done for the project:
1.     I sewed the tape covers on to the belt we had designed with tape that Sarah and I had plaited (to strengthen it).
I sewed strings of tape we had tied together on to half of the skirt (I started off the sewing of the skirt).
2.     Paper machèd the corset piece and made sure it fitted Muireann (our model)! When it had dried, we painted it black.
3.     At the moment, I’m sticking some more tape onto the corset, I’m sticking it with PVA glue on to masking tape, then painting over any exposed masking tape with the black paint.
Alana O'Sullivan:
For our Junk Kouture project we’re using metal bottle caps. At the start of September I went along with another member of our group to all the pubs in celbridge to collect enough bottle caps to cover our dress. I then washed and dried these bottle caps. We then decided that we were going to use our bottle caps like buttons so we had to hammer two holes into each bottle cap, so using a nail and hammer I did my share of the bottle caps.  For our shoes we decided that we’re using old wedges and completely covering them in the little colourful cubes that depict different sizes on the tops of hangers ( eg 8, 16, 12) . So I completely covered both shoes so their now finished. For our skirt were using paper mashed chicken wire. Our original idea didn’t work so we’re using four panels a front, two sides and a back and we’re going to sew them together so our skirt will stick out. So after I finished paper mashing my panel I then started sewing the bottle caps on in the design on the front of our dress. I am now starting the sewing on the back of the dress.
Katie Sheahan:
This year in TY we are all doing a project called Junk Kouture. The idea is that you make an outfit completely out of rubbish. Each group thought of an overall theme and what materials they want to use and then we all got started. My group went along with the drinking materials theme. We started collecting bottle caps and tops of drink cans during the summer so we were ready to start in September. We have 3 doubles of Junk Kouture a week in Art, Design and Home Ec. As a result everyone is on their way with their project. So far we have made the bottom of the dress and the top made. We used chicken wire and then paper mashed it for the bottom. For the top we used a bin bag and make it a one shoulder top. It has been my part in the group to do the top of the dress and I have been sewing bottle caps on to the top with invisible thread. I have finished the front and I will be starting the back soon. We are using straws for the bottom of the dress, so the other girls have been making sections of straws be threading some straws altogether on thread so we just have to sew each section to the bottom. We will be starting that next week. I have also cut out a peplum from an umbrella and will be starting to stick bottle caps on it upside down this weekend.Apart from the actual outfit we have made the jewellery using the can tops put onto wires for a necklace and a bracelet.I am really enjoying Junk Kouture so far and I can’t wait to see the finished look.
Shauna O'Grady:
Firstly I along with the two other girls had to come  up with an idea of what to do for our dress and what materials we would use.We had to think of materials that would be possible to use and also materials that were available and recycable .
After we came up of the idea of making our dress out of botte caps, straws and the silver tops of cans.I had to go and look for these items.
My group and I then deciced to paint the bottle caps. This did not work out very well so we changed our idea to instead of painting them just leavig the caps the way they were,I then had to put a hole through the middle of each bottle cap.
Once the bottle tops were all collected and a hole was made through them,we started on the bottom.I had to cut out chicken wire for the skirt and also paper mache the chicken wire a few times for our skirt.
I also had to cut out the black bag for the top part of the dress.
For the skirt we are doing straws so I had to sew straws together. We did 13 lots of straws and my next part of the project is to stick these straws onto the paper mache for the skirt.
Everything I did here was completed by the 2 other girls in my group, along with myself.
Jenny O'Brien:
At the start of September, we started our junk couture project. I’m in a group with Leah and Emma. The first week we had to plan everything we were going to do for the project, we had to think of different recyclable materials to use. We decided to use cardboard and black bags to make feathers for the skirt of the dress. We had to make loads of feathers from cardboard and black bags; we glued the black bags onto cardboard and cut out the shape of a feather.  We also made the top of the dress which is made from chicken wire and paper mashe. We then went on to make our skirt which is made from an old bed sheet, we decided to make the skirt go from short to long from one side of the leg to the other one. We cut out each part of the skirt separately then we sewed each part together, we then put an elastic band at the top of the skirt and then we sewed on four buttons at the side where it opens and closes. At the Moment we are sewing the feathers onto the skirt and continuing to make more feathers for the skirt as we are going to overlap the feathers on the skirt.
Leah Hogan:
As part of our year in TY we all do a project called junk couture. This involves making an outfit entirely out of recycled materials. I am in a group with Jenny and Emma and we decided to have a black swan theme. Our idea was to have a skirt that goes to the side and a top. Our initial idea for the skirt was to collect real feathers and stick them onto a skirt but we had no where we could get feathers from so we decided to make feathers instead. We made loads of feathers with recycled cardboard and black sacks. We then made a skirt out of an old bed sheet and made a top out of chicken wire and paper maché. We painted the top white which we will later stick stuff on which will tie in with the black swan theme that we decided on. At the moment we are sewing the feathers that we made onto the skirt and are also making more feathers as we are going to need loads to fill the skirt with.
Ciara Hodson:
At the start of TY all of us had to get into groups of three as we are all entering in the Junk Kouture competition. We all must make a dress entirely out of recycled materials. My fellow designers in my group are Alana and Elizabeth. Our dress is going to be completely decorated with BOTTLECAPS. We collected the bottle caps from all of the pubs in Celbridge. So we started off hammering two holes into each bottle cap using a hammer and nail. There was a lot of bottle caps so it took us a while and our fingers were sore after. And after we did this we started making the skirt. We made 4 separate pieces for the skirt out of chicken wire and we began to paper mashe them. This took us a while as there was thre of us and four large panels of a skirt. We got it done though and we painted the panels black. While the paper mashe was happening we also began sewing bottle tops to the dress. I did some but Alana did the most as she got her one panel done first. Now we plan on attaching the panels of the skirt together and start to stick the bottle tops onto the skirt.
Sarah Smith:
I am in a group with Muireann and Abby for Junk Kouture. We are making great progress with the project. The theme of our outfit is worked around old tapes and consists of a painted black bodice made out of paper mâché and an old skirt with lots of cut pieces from the inside of old tapes all stuck together to give a rara look. We work well together and so far haven't come across any problems.

Sarah Byrne:
Over the past six weeks all t.y. students have been working on a junk kouture project, making a complete outfit out of junk! I am working with my friend, Eve and we are making a dress out of magazines! It will be a high-low dress with only one strap. We have paper machéd the bodice and the skirt. We then made loads of origami flowers by looking up tutorials on youtube which will be used to decorate the top part of the dress. We have also woven over sixty square panels which will be sewn together to make the skirt which we have recently started sewing on. We also made a big origami bow for the back of the dress as well as little bows for the back of the shoes. Once the dress is completed, we will be using origami to decorate shoes, a headpiece and jewellery. The project is going very well and we are really enjoying it!

OUR REFLECTIONS:
Ciara O'Conell:
What i've done so far in my art blog is the top of the outfit. It is made out of news paper and magazine, half of it is newspaper and the other half is magazine. Most of this project i've been doing on my own because my partner Alannah is out most of these classes. I've achieved a lot during this project which is meeting deadlines and also making sure everything is brought in on time, and also working together. I also like doing this project because it gives us the opportunity to see if we can get things done on time and meet are deadline. I am looking forward to finishing the project and seeing what it turns out like!

Abbie Keegan:
I’ve learned a lot from the process of my Junk Kouture project. I have learned how to work in a team and learn how to lead a group. I am our team manager, so it’s up to me to make sure everything is going ok for us! When we were starting our outfit, we had to collect all the recycled materials we would need for our project. I learned how to become more organised, and to ask people to donate their old cassette tapes. I had to be organised to remind people to kindly bring them in for us.Another key thing I learned from this project is how to manage my time and also divide tasks up between team members so that we all have equal amounts of work to do. When we realised all the work that had to be done, we divided all the tasks up. I had to work efficiently so that I could complete each of the tasks so that my group could carry on in making the outfit without having to wait for me to finish off jobs.Since my last blog, we have finished off the skirt completely and have started on accessories and researching what we would like to put with our outfit. I am also almost finished decorating the corsette I was working on, I’m really happy with the progress we have made. The outfit is really starting to look well and ready for wearing! All of the teachers are really helping us too, they are giving us more ideas and encouragement!
Shauna O'Grady:
For my Junk Couture project my froup nd I are making our dress out of bottle caps and sraws.I really enjoyed making this dress and I think its a great idea.
From doing this project,it has improved my group skills as we are working in a group all the time. Also doing this project has made me listen more to other peoples ideas.
When picking what materials we were going to use for our dress,my group and I had to choose on an idea that everyone agreed on.Therefore this project has improved my skills of coming together as a group, listening to others and picking an idea that everyone liked and agreed on.
I have also achieved these skills from taking part in Junk Couture and I also learnt how to paper maché better and sew better.
Katie Sheahan:
We are coming towards the end of our Junk Kouture project and everyone’s outfit is starting to come together. I was very excited when we started Junk Kouture but I feel that it didn’t live up to my expectations very well. I am enjoying it to an extent but there is a lot of work involved, especially when some members aren’t pulling their weight. I don’t mind doing the project, but I want it done a certain way and I find that the group work doesn’t work sometimes. The whole idea of the Junk Kouture is a brilliant idea and I love that it makes you think outside of the box. I hope that when it is completely finished that it was all worthwhile and that we will be happy with our finished outfit.
Jenny O'Brien:
Over the past few weeks in Art we have been finishing our junk couture projects.  My group and I made a skirt from an old bed sheet and made feathers from cardboard and black bags, which we sewed on to the skirt, the skirt is nearly complete and I can’t wait to see how it looks when it’s finished. What I’ve learned from doing the junk couture project is you need a lot of patience and time as it takes a lot of time to get your design the way you want it to be and a lot of time is needed to complete your outfit. I have also learned how to work better in a team and make sure everyone in the team does an even amount of work and that each person in the team contributes their ideas to improve the dress. This project has made me be more creative and to be open minded about different ways to make the dress look better. We still have another 3 weeks left to complete the dress and to add accessories to it.
Leah Hogan:
During the weeks leading up to our midterm break me and the other girls in my group mainly just kept working on our skirt. We made more feathers and we began to sew on the feathers by hand. This took a very long time and we were very worried that we wouldn’t be finished in time. When we came back after the midterm break it was suggested to us that we should use the machine to sew on all of the feathers. We tried this out and realised that it was a much faster way of doing it and would save us time to work on the rest of our outfit. Our top is made and in the next few weeks we plan on beginning to start sticking stuff on it once we have the skirt complete. We will then also make some accessories to go with our outfit. I think that our project is going well and I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s complete. I think once we keep our heads down and keep working on it we’ll get it done in time. Throughout this experience I have learned that I am not as bad at art as I thought I was and I’m also more creative than I thought I was. I also learnt more about working in a group and listening to people’s opinions.
Emma Ni Dhonnchad:
Reflection-
So far, I feel that my group's Junk Kouture project is quite successful. We are almost finished the skirt and are currently working on the top. Throughout the process of this project, I think I have learned a lot and also gained some new skills. I feel that I have learned a lot about teamwork and how to work well with a group, as well as decision making. My group had to overcome certain challenges such as deciding what was the best way to attach the cardboard feathers to our skirt, which was difficult, but when we put our ideas together we managed to overcome these. I also feel I have gained skills in art and home economics and I have become more creative from designing and creating the dress out of recycled materials. I learned how to make the structure of the dress using paper maché and chicken wire, which I wouldn't have been able to do before. I also feel I have improved in skills such as machine sewing and making templates for clothing. With the help of our home ec teacher, we cut out templates for the skirt of our dress, and then sewed them together using a sewing machine. Our first attempt at making a skirt wasn't successful so I think I have improved my skills in this area, and I also feel more confident using a sewing machine. Although I have enjoyed working on this project and look forward to seeing the final products, I don't think I would enjoy being a designer in the future, it was much harder than I thought it would be!
Ciara Hodson:
I have learnt a lot over the past couple of weeks doing Junk Kouture. I have learned to work better in a group as well as I have never done much of that before in school. It has been a different experience because in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year we didn’t do an awful lot of group work so doing junk couture has been a new experience and has helped us improve our team working skills. Also from doing junk couture I have learned to think outside of the box when it came to making the dress. If one idea didn’t work we had to think of another way to do what we needed to do. When things weren’t going our way we learned how to take a step back and think through our design. I have really enjoyed the experience of junk Kouture and I think I have learned a lot.

Elizabeth Fitzsimons:
Through the process of Junk Kouture I have learned a lot about myself.
I have learned that I work well in a group. We are all getting on really well together and take each others opinions into account. I have learned to coprimise. At times we all had different ideas but we learned to to work with ea other and come up with options that suited us all.I have learned that I cope well under pressure and deal with problems well. Our first idea for our skirt was a disaster and we were at a loss for what to do but we all stayed focused and were able to come up with a new idea without getting too stressed.

Hannah O'Reilly:
last time i blogged about junk kouture it was all running smoothly and our team had not been faced with any major challenges or change in course, well that has all changed. We are running short of time and we still don't have our skirt done as the skirt we originaly designed was a disaster. The skirt we were using as a base wasn't working well with our bottles so we had to skrap that. We tried to work with the bottles but with time running short we came up with a different idea altogether for our skirt. We have a new base and are cutting snowflakes out of soup containers, we will be spray painting some of them silver to corispond with the disco ball pieces. The two or three week's of junk kouture have proven to be very difficult for my team and I and we have faced a lot of challenges, i think it has helped us learn from our mistakes tho, it has thought me to plan things more and not to jump at our first opertunity of what seem's like the "easy choice". The change in course for our project has also thought me patients in creativity and that no great idea will come from nowhere it may take time and that I just have to wait. I think my group and i have overcome our challenge quite well and have made a smooth recovery from our rough patch.
Laura O'Flynn:
At this stage the bodess is completed. It was quiet time consuming but it was worth it in the end and we are pleased how it turned out. All our bottles are cut out in the shape of icicles. We got an old grey skirt to use to stick the icicles onto but as we began to sew them on we knew it wasn’t going to work out the way we wanted it to. When I tried it on with the bodess it didn’t look right at all so we had to change the skirt. We found an old rara skirt in the Home Ec room that no one was using any more, and it looked perfect for our outfit ! We plan on spray painting the iceicles grey and then sewing them all over the skirt giving a layerd effect. We have since also got started on our shoes. We cut up more styraphome and stook them all over the shoes so they match the bodess. On the outline of the shoes we stook the diamond pieces from the outside of the disco ball on. With all three of us working together as a team we are over coming any problems we face and the outfit it really coming along!
Sarah Smith:
Muireann, Abbie and myself are getting along quite well with our Junk Kouture project and are happy with our work so far. Last week, we completely finished our skirt made from cut up tapes, have our belt finished and are almost complete our bodice. All we have left to do is design our shoes and a few more accessories such as a bracelet, bag, headpiece or necklace. These should be completed in the next couple of weeks as we have our designs for them and it shouldn't be too difficult. I have found this project to be a great experience for many reasons. It has taught me how to work in a team better and when I’m given a job to do it, as other people are relying on me. It has also taught me creativity skills and how to not give up on something just because you can’t see results from the very beginning. The thing I found hardest in this project was definitely the very beginning when we had to design the outfit, as no one had any ideas, and we ended up changing our design about 5 times. I also found it hard at the beginning when we started making the skirt as it was a very time consuming process and at the start we didn’t see any results, but after that it became a lot easier. The easiest thing about this project was being able to have fun at the same time as getting the work done. This project has definitely taught me a lot.

Lisa O'Connor:
By doing this project I have learned to work in a group better by making decisions on how we were going to do certain things to our dress and deciding which way would be the best .We have got on really well and we agreed on most things. I have also learnt that I am not as bad at sowing as I thought and I feel I’m getting better at it. I learnt how to do paper maché and I found out that it’s quite a long process.
My group and I found out that we have to plan things out better before we begin as what we were hoping to do with our dress didn’t go to plan.
Muireann O'Donaghue:
This last couple of weeks, while we have been working on our 'Junk Kouture' I have learned a lot about myself. I'm working in a group of two other girls, Abbie and Sarah. From working in a group, I have learned quite a lot about myself. So far I have learned that I am quite controlling and bossy. I like to give people orders and tell them what they have to do instead of just working on what I have to do. This is a bad fault I have and I'm learning to recognize it and stop when I am doing it :P I also learned that I now like working in groups. I use to hate working with people as I always thought they would let me down by forgetting to do things and stuff like that but for this project you need to work with people or it would never get done. I then learned that working in a group is actually really fun and great. I also learned that I am actually creative. I didn't do art or anything in school but I loved designing and making the outfit.

Alanna O'Sullivan:
Junk Kouture has helped me learn a lot of new skills. As it was one of the first projects we had in TY, it was a really good way to show me what sort of teamwork skills I had. I think it’s really improved my teamwork skills as there’s so much work within the project that you have to really rely on the other members in your group.  I feel Junk Kouture has improved my creativity skills as we wanted to be creative when choosing our materials and when designing our dress, and so the project made me think outside the box. Junk Kouture also greatly improved my sewing skills as the top of our dress was entirely sewed on bottle caps. Junk couture has also taught me how to better work with fabrics, especially metal, glue, paper and material. As we needed specific jobs done by certain times it taught me a lot about working under pressure.  It also taught me a lot about having to compromise in different situations, for example if two ideas are put forward and you prefer one but the other two members prefer the other then you may have to compromise. It taught me not to doubt our ideas, for example when you see everyone else’s ideas, you can’t be constantly thinking that you should change yours because you feel theirs is better, you have to have confidence with your choices and see it through. Over all Junk Kouture has been a really enjoyable experience so far and it has taught me a lot.
Eve Lawler:
We are 11 weeks into the school year, and with the Christmas deadline approaching, all Transition Year students are working hard to complete their Junk Kouture outfit!
I am working with my friend, Sarah and we decided to use magazines as our material! We gathered lots of magazines from family, friends and even our local hairdressers to ensure we had a nice pile to keep us busy!
We started off the project by making 60+ woven panels! This was a very time consuming as we had to cut all the magazine strips equally, glue them, and begin to weave them into squares. When we finished the woven panels, we applied varnish to them to ensure that they would be strong enough on the dress.
We then began working on our bodice and origami. We used chicken wire to shape our bodice. When we were happy with the shape, we used more magazines to paper mache the chicken wire. We had to apply several layers to make the bodice strong. We then cut out a shoulder strap from the chicken wire and incorporated it into the piece. For the origami, we researched different types on the internet and looked at YouTube videos to guide us through making them. After the first few, we became confident in the steps and the process got quicker. Sarah and I decided to create a large origami bow for the back of our dress to conceal any joinings. This challenged us as we had to find a size to suit the bow. We ended up using a large sheet of card and gluing strips of magazines front and back. We had to work very carefully with this bow as it was quite thick and we didn’t want to make a mistake.
For the skirt, we picked chicken wire again. After deciding on a shape, we once again applied 2-3 layers of paper mache on to cover up gaps and have a stronger base. Then came the challenge of attaching 60+ woven panels, ensuring they were even and uniform. After using the trial and error method, we decided to use fishing line to sow on the panels. We sowed each individual panel on through pre made holes, making it easier to attach. This step took several days as we wanted to make sure they were sturdily attached. After completing the skirt, we had to sow 3 more rows of panels to make up the back of the skirt where the length would be longer. These rows were then added to the main skirt and extra sowing was done where we felt necessary.
Using a guillotine, I cut strips of glossy magazine covers to decorate the base of the bodice. We applied these to the dress using glue. We used a drill to make holes where the bodice will join with ribbon, however, the skirt was too thick so we found a way to create holes using a sharp pointer in the tech room.
We are currently beginning to attach the origami pieces to the top of the bodice and shoulder using a hot glue gun. We hope to finish this step in the upcoming week and start working on shoes and accessories. I have learnt a lot during the project so far. Although very time consuming, Sarah and I have enjoyed finding new ways of experimenting with the dress. I have learnt how to make origami which was very interesting and how to keep to a set schedule in order to get our outfit completed in time.

Sarah Byrne:
Since starting the Junk Kouture project I have learnt many new things about myself and new skills.
I feel I can now work better in a group and understand how dividing up tasks really helps get a job done faster.
I have also learnt many new skills in working with magazines. I now know how to make many different origami flowers and how to weave with magazines. I have also improved my paper maché and sewing skills.
